Shaw Go WiFi Finder App

Lead UX Designer, Shaw Communications Inc.

Background: The objective of the Shaw Go WiFi Finder app is to help Shaw Internet customers and guests find Shaw Go WiFi hotspots near them.

The challenge was to design an app that was scalable across multiple devices including iOS (phone/tablet), Android (phone/tablet), Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry (phone/tablet) within an aggressive timeline.

Approach: Since the development team was an offsite vendor I chose to create interactive wireframes/ prototype to effectively and efficiently communicate interaction and flow. This approach also proved invaluable when presenting the initial concept to stakeholders.

The wireframes focused on the iPhone devices and variations were created to accommodate for the specific needs of each OS and device.

Results: Together, with an incredible team, we successfully delivered seven apps within nine months. The iOS app ranked second in the Featured Apps in the Canadian Apple App store.

Optimizations: About a year after the release the scalability of the app had been outgrown by the continuous increase of hotspots.

To improve the perceived performance of the app while backend issues were being addressed, the Visual Designer, Mobile Developer and myself iterated through multiple possible solutions until we identified the best possible solution that provided instant success.
